DST
Introduction:

DST Tools

A Drill Stem Test (DST) is run to obtain information about the well fluids, pressures and temperatures in the formation which is open to the borehole. The test was usually carried out in an open hole or barefoot well to save the expense of running casing or liner in the case of the well being dry or un-commercial. Drill pipe, which was already on the rig, made up in stands ready to run, was used to run the tools and packer, it saved time and money, hence the term DST.

The actual DST tools used will depend on the well test design and the well parameters. The type of DST string run could include a packer, permanent or retrievable depending on well conditions or availability. A gauge carrier or carriers each with 4 off gauges, a downhole tester valve (downhole isolating or shut in device), circulating device (multi-operational), annular kill valves (single operation), premium connection sour service tubing string to surface, on land s SSSV, and X-mas tree, offshore a SSTT and landing string with retainer and lubricator valves and a flow head.

Offshore the type of DST was the annular pressure response (APR) operated tools, which required a cased hole to ensure the safe and reliable operation of the tools (no pressure losses in formation).
